Chris and Lisa Marie

Chris was just 22 when his life changed overnight

A severe brain inflammation triggered relentless seizures which led to a diagnosis of drug-resistant epilepsy. Until then, he had been active and independent: working as a painter and varnisher while training for a master craftsman qualification, and playing football several times a week.

Today, despite a complex mix of medications, a vagus nerve stimulator, a ketogenic diet and strict routines, Chris still experiences frequent seizures on an almost daily basis. The impact of epilepsy on Chris’ life has been profound: he can no longer drive or find a job on the regular job market. To maintain some daily routine, he works in a supported employment setting run by a non-profit organisation called Lebenshilfe (Life Help).

Work, leisure, driving—everything is affected. In his current situation, there is simply no job he can do.

Everyday activities require supervision and careful planning. Chris communicates well but can struggle to find the right words, sometimes needing additional time to express what he wants to say. Socially, his world has grown smaller too; friendships have faded, and much of his daily structure now depends on family support and assisted activities.

Friends are, unfortunately, a very sad topic… Over the past two years, no one has come to visit.

Despite this, Chris refuses to be defined by his condition. He remains warm, upbeat and determined to make the most of what he has. He finds joy in simple things—music, watching football, time away with loved ones—and still tries to push himself physically, going on walks and short trips whenever possible.

Despite everything, he remains a person with a very positive outlook… and he has never given up hope that one day something will make him seizure-free.

His story is a stark reminder of the burden of drug-resistant epilepsy and of the resilience it demands. Behind the clinical reality is someone who continues to hope that one day, a treatment might finally bring his seizures under control.
